  • The Porch of the Caryatids, or the famous "Porch of the Maidens".

There are six draped female figures (caryatids) supporting the columns, each sculpted in a manner different from the rest and engineered in such a way that their slenderest part, the neck, is capable of supporting the weight of the porch roof while remaining graceful and feminine. The porch was built to conceal the giant 15-ft beam needed to support the southwest corner over the metropolis, after the building and the construction budget was drastically reduced in size due to the onset of the Peloponnesian war.

  • The Corinth Canal is a canal that connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf in the Aegean Sea. It cuts through the narrow Isthmus of Corinth and separates the Peloponnesian peninsula from the Greek mainland, thus effectively making the former an island.

The canal is 6.3 kilometres in length and was built between 1881 and 1893.

The original idea to cut through this area was proposed in the 7th century BC by the Greek ruler Periander.
